Writing Sporadically

When I first started this blog, I wasn’t sure whether I would be writing daily, weekly or just whenever. I was leaning towards a ‘just whenever’ approach but hoped that it would be a fairly regular thing. I’ve always struggled to find a balance between flexibility and structure, a balance which I think most self-employed, self-driven people struggle with. We work for yourselves because we want the freedom of time that comes with self-employment but we also know that we need to structure our working life in such a manner as to be able to be consistently productive. Things that aren’t as immediately important to us, such as this blog writing in comparison with paying writing gigs, tend to slip to the side.

However, I’ve decided that this blog is actually important to me. I think it’s a means of checking in with myself on a daily basis to see where things stand with my writing. And I also hope that it will be a place where I can regularly communicate with my readers. I’ve been writing only sporadically since it started for a number of reasons … including a trip that took me back to my hometown and issues that have been going on with other jobs. But I think it’s important to step aside and take a little bit of time for daily writing that’s not a means to an end but is just writing to write.

I’ve always done little things to create this writing space for myself. When I wake up in the morning, I don’t jump straight in to work but instead spend some time reading. This puts me in a mood where I can appreciate the art of crafting words again, rather than just leaping into crafting them as part of my job. I also spend some time during this reading searching for a quote of the day that I can use to inspire me throughout the working hours. I find ways to remind myself that writing is something I do because it is something that I love. I hope that this blog will soon be yet another daily way of doing that.
